THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR RISING SIGN AND THE PLANET THAT RULES IT
Your Rising sign is the most personal part of you. Ancient astrologers saw your Rising sign as describing your personality, self, identity, and body. Pop modern astrology has taught us that our Sun sign encompasses who we are, but it’s only one slice of the pie that makes up who you are, and your life.
Ancient astrologers saw your Rising sign as describing who you are, and the direction of your life. Understanding your Rising sign helps you better understand yourself, and the life that’s important to you. If you haven’t resonated much with your Sun sign, perhaps you resonate with your Rising sign more? On the contrary, if you feel like you’ve resonated more with your Sun sign than your Rising sign, I encourage you to dig deeper into your Rising sign, and peel back the various layers it has to offer.
Put your Sun sign and every other sign on the back burner for now and think about what traits of your rising sign might describe you, your demeanor, and/or how you operate. When I started learning more about my Rising sign, I unraveled deeper parts of myself that I knew existed, but I hadn’t truly affirmed or embraced. Now, I embrace the qualities of this sign that are in me, and I can see how they 100% attribute to the experiences my soul came into this life to have.
We’ve tended to over-identify with our Sun sign because that's what we've been taught from modern pop astrology, and because finding our Sun sign is the easiest since all you have to know is your date of birth. But, in order to know your Rising sign, you need to know the exact time you were born.
Your rising sign is the sign that was rising on the horizon when you were born. Ancient astrologers believed that the soul entered the body at the moment of birth, so whatever sign was rising is the one most personal to you. The rising sign changes signs more frequently than the planets, which is why you need to know your exact birth time in order to know it.
Using whole sign houses, your Rising sign is the first house. All the other planets and houses in your birth chart represent a multitude of experiences and other people in your life, but your Rising sign and the 1st house is the only sign and house that ONLY represents you. It represents your self, personhood, appearance, body, and personality.
Your Rising sign is the first house AND your ascendant. Your ascendant is the degree point of your Rising sign, but they are the same sign. It’s important to know the degree because that shows us its connection to other planets, if it has connections to other planets, and how close its connection is to other planets are in your chart. The details of that are best understood in an astrology reading with a professional astrologer, but all to say that your ascendant is an important part of your chart.
So the first house and your Rising sign are the most personal parts of you, and all of the houses are derived from your Rising sign. In order to know what houses you have planets in, we have to know your Rising sign. This is why the time of birth is so important. Horoscopes stem from your Rising sign. This is why you want to look at your horoscope from the perspective of your Rising sign. The houses tell us what areas of life are in focus for you. A horoscope is looking at your life from the perspective of the houses from your Rising sign. So, you can look at your horoscope from your Sun sign if you don’t know your Rising sign, but it won’t be fully accurate. Some things might resonate, but it's not going to give you the complete picture.
I've had astrology readings with astrologers before where they never mentioned my Rising sign, and that is a big no-no. I wish they had because when I started diving in and learning more about astrology and my Rising sign, it explained so much about me, who I am, and how I am. And, that’s the point of an astrology reading, to learn more about yourself and your life.
When we know ourselves better, then we can better advocate for what we need and want, be more of ourselves, and live more of the life that our souls came here to live.I would have benefited from those astrologers talking to me about my Rising sign. With my clients, I always tell them what their Rising sign is, as well as the planet that rules their Rising sign.
You want to know your Rising sign, any planets you have in that sign, which are also a big part of you and your life story, and the planet that rules your Rising sign. Ancient astrologers saw the first place, which is also the first house, as the helm or the ship. Then, the planet that rules your Rising sign is the one steering the ship. It’s important to know both.
So, your Rising sign represents you, and the planet that rules your Rising sign is guiding your life towards a specific destination. In an astrology reading, we look at where the planet that rules your Rising sign is - the house and sign it’s in, as well as other planets it’s aspecting in order to understand its condition, and what possible challenges, obstacles, and/or more fortunate experiences it reveals in your life.
